ACTION ALERT!
Otero Mesa Under Attack
The Bush Administration has declared an all-out war on western public lands, with America's red rock wilderness at ground zero. Riding roughshod over all opposition and engaging in closed door meetings and giveaways with oil and gas companies, Bush and his corporate sponsors are blindsiding the American public with agreements aimed at preventing future wilderness designations and giving away our precious public lands. The latest target is exploratory drilling on Otero Mesa in New Mexico - a fragile desert grassland.

"The bottom line continues to be we are talking about destroying the largest remaining desert grasslands in America for at best a few days worth of oil and gas. That is shortsighted."

ACTION ALERT!
Global Warming at Critical Point
Global warming is rapidly approaching the
point of no return, after which widespread drought, crop failure and rising sea levels will be irreversible. Halting warming and reversing it within the next ten years is a must. Take action today! First, sign the petition urging our lawmakers to pass the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act and then write to your Congresspersons, Senators, State Legislators, Local Officials and the President to express your concerns. You can locate their contact info at: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/.

Make sure to include the following points in your letters:

1. At the moment there is no government plan to solve these problems, only more of the same rhetoric and policies that have
increased energy prices almost 50% in many areas this past winter -- costing billions in excess expense for transportation and utilities. It is time to find real solutions to these real problems.

2. The U.S. should sign on to the Kyoto Protocols (to cut back on fossil fuel emissions dramatically and immediately).

3. Congress needs to make alternative energy resources attractive and provide incentives for use -- such as offering tax credits for those people in the U.S. that install solar energy for their home needs, like hot water and lighting.

4. Reduce dependence on oil and other fossil fuels -- particularly foreign oil such as that from Iraq -- thereby reducing global warming and pollution problems and increasing our security and safety here at home. Wind power and home solar power could be brought online within 3 years (the technology is available). Municipal and industrial solar power (central boiler farms)
could be brought online within 5 years. Hybrid automobiles (gas/electric) must be made readily available (until hydrogen fuel for automobiles and trucks and can become a reality). Continue to promote methane gas technology for powering livestock industries. Not only would these alternative energy sources reduce global warming and pollution but they would create huge new industries (like solar cell manufacturing, solar mirror construction, solar farms, etc.) providing a vast array of jobs and economic benefits. These have the potential to be huge industries and the U.S. should take the lead NOW.

5. Seedling trees should be planted in all the national forests -- thereby reducing CO2 loading in the atmosphere and increasing oxygen. More info on tree planting.

6. Make sure and mention your support for the reintroduction and passage of the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act of 2003.

"We've lost a battle today, but we'll win over time because climate change is real. And we will overcome the influence of the special interests over time. You can only win by marshaling public opinion."
      -John McCain
       United States Senator

ACTION ALERT!
Despite Known Human Health & Environmental Risks, Safeway Continues to Sell Farmed Salmon
Safeway has been under pressure from consumers recently to stop selling farmed salmon due to the known human health and environmental risks this product poses. But despite marketing claims that they are an environmentally responsible business, Safeway continues to sell farmed salmon. Take action and sign the petition asking them to stop this misguided practice.

  1. STAY INFORMED
Register for our E-News and receive important news, action alerts and updates from Endangered Species Early Warning.

  2. PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSIONS
Visit the ESEW blog at http://esew.blogspot.com/ and review our discussion forum. Want to contribute to the blog? Send e-mail to ceei@cox-internet.com and request to be signed on as a contributing member.

  3. EXPRESS YOURSELF
Make your concerns and opinions heard on the issues by writing letters to your Congresspersons, Senators, State Legislators, Local Officials and the President. Visit the Congressional Directory  to locate the addresses and other contact information you need to send e-mail, snail mail or a FAX to your elected representatives. Get started by commenting on the Action Alerts posted at right.

  4. PLANT A TREE
Because trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, planting them can help reduce global warming (COis one of the major contributors to global warming). Learn more
about how planting trees can help. (The National Arbor Day Foundation is an excellent resource for trees and how-to information.)

  5. ADOPT A STREAM
Go to http://www.epa.gov/adopt and sign up to help protect and restore our valuable rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes, ground water, and estuaries.

  6. OFFSET YOUR EMISSIONS
A new company, Benven LLC, is selling a product called TerraPass, essentially a bumper sticker identifying the driver as a volunteer in the fight against global warming. Using a market-based system of carbon credits and debits not unlike Kyoto, TerraPass allows drivers to pay to offset their cars' annual emission of greenhouse gases. Benven directs the money from TerraPass sales toward clean energy and efficiency projects that will reduce overall carbon-dioxide emissions. Go to http://www.terrapass.com/ to learn more or participate.

  7. VOLUNTEER
CEEI needs people that care about the environment who can assist our web development company in researching news, developing GIS maps, writing and editing press releases, contributing photography and more. Learn more about how you can help.

  8. MAKE A DONATION
Help CEEI achieve our Mission Objectives and make a tax-deductible donation today. (Donations of $15 or more will receive one free, high resolution photo download from our Gallery.)

  9. HELP GET THE WORD OUT
Call you local school district, high schools and universities. Make sure you talk to Environmental Studies teachers, or the Deans of Science and Education. Tell them about CEEI's Endangered Species Early Warning web site as a resource for their classes at www.esew.org.

  10. ADOPT-A-SPECIES
CEEI invites all K-12 students to participate in our Adopt-A-Species program.
Each species we propose for listing on this web site requires a broad range of documentation, distribution information, photographs, habitat descriptions and more in order to support our efforts to get official recognition and listing of the species in trouble. Please help CEEI compile this data by adopting a species to research and collect information about. Your materials (after review by CEEI) will be added to the species page on the ESEW web site and your name, school and grade level will be highlighted as that species' sponsor. Contact CEEI
for more information on how to Adopt-A-Species and join us as we work to save and restore all threatened and endangered plants and animals.
